Pokémon Royal Sword & Royal Shield

Unusable Moves

Royal Sword and Royal Shield brought back tons of unique and favored moves from past generations. Nevertheless, a lot of them have been scrapped yet again for various reasons. Due to the lack of the Z-Move system from Generation 7, no Z-Move has been added back and there are no plans to reimplement the system at all. The signature moves belonging to some cut Pokémon have been excluded as they would be redundant. Even though I originally considered readding them, Pikachu's and Eevee's signature moves from the Let's Go games have been scrapped as well.

NameTypingCategoryPPPowerAccuracyDescriptionReason for exclusion
Tier 1: Considered for future inclusion
Feint AttackDarkPhysical2060-The user approaches the target disarmingly, then throws a sucker punch. This attack never misses. To be honest, I can see myself adding back these two moves in the future. But I feel that there are way too many preferable choices over these moves already.
Chip AwayNormalPhysical2070100%Looking for an opening, the user strikes consistently. The target’s stat changes don’t affect this attack’s damage.
Tier 2: Broken moves that were considered
Natural GiftNormalPhysical15-100%The user draws power to attack by using its held Berry. The Berry determines the move’s type and power. These moves were originally considered to be included, however, their effects are either unfinished or dummied-out completely. For example, Ion Deluge always fails, just like in USUM v1.0.
TelekinesisPsychicStatus15--The user makes the target float with its psychic power. The target is easier to hit for three turns.
RototillerGroundStatus10--Tilling the soil, the user makes it easier for plants to grow. This raises the Attack and Sp. Atk stats of Grass-type Pokémon.
Ion DelugeElectricStatus25--The user disperses electrically charged particles, which changes Normal-type moves to Electric-type moves.
Tier 3: Redundant moves that clog up learnsets
Karate ChopFightingPhysical2550100%The target is attacked with a sharp chop. Critical hits land more easily.Literally all of them are 100% replacable by better options...
Razor WindNormalSpecial1080100%In this two-turn attack, blades of wind hit opposing Pokémon on the second turn. Critical hits land more easily.
BideNormalPhysical10--The user endures attacks for two turns, then strikes back to cause double the damage taken.
Egg BombNormalPhysical1010075%A large egg is hurled at the target with maximum force to inflict damage.
Bone ClubGroundPhysical206585%The user clubs the target with a bone. This may also make the target flinch.
ClampWaterPhysical153585%The target is clamped and squeezed by the user’s very thick and sturdy shell for four to five turns.
ConstrictNormalPhysical3510100%The target is attacked with long, creeping tentacles, vines, or the like. This may also lower the target’s Speed stat.
BubbleWaterSpecial3040100%A spray of countless bubbles is jetted at the opposing Pokémon. This may also lower their Speed stat.
Double SlapNormalPhysical101585%The target is slapped repeatedly, back and forth, two to five times in a row.A lot of replacable multi-strike moves whose consecutive hits are RNG dependent. Only a few Pokémon that learned one of these moves in the past games had access to Skill Link.
Comet PunchNormalPhysical151885%The target is hit with a flurry of punches that strike two to five times in a row.
Spike CannonNormalPhysical1520100%Sharp spikes are shot at the target in rapid succession. They hit two to five times in a row.
Sonic BoomNormalSpecial20-90%The target is hit with a destructive shock wave that always inflicts 20 HP damage.Only helpful in the early game, but the move becomes useless the closer you get into late game as these moves always deal a fixed amount of damage.
Dragon RageDragonSpecial10-100%This attack hits the target with a shock wave of pure rage. This attack always inflicts 40 HP damage.
MeditatePsychicStatus40--The user meditates to awaken the power deep within its body and raise its Attack stat. For each of these moves exists a (better) alternative; Meditate and Sharpen are replacable by Swords Dance or Work Up. Eerie Impulse has the same effect as Captivate, however, the former luckily lacks the opposite gender restriction. Trick is a better version of Bestow.
FlashNormalStatus20-100%The user flashes a bright light that cuts the target’s accuracy.
SharpenNormalStatus30--The user makes its edges more jagged, which raises its Attack stat.
CaptivateNormalStatus20-100%If any opposing Pokémon is the opposite gender of the user, it is charmed, which harshly lowers its Sp. Atk stat.
BestowNormalStatus15--The user passes its held item to the target when the target isn’t holding an item.
RageNormalPhysical2020100%As long as this move is in use, the power of rage raises the Attack stat each time the user is hit in battle. While the concept is interesting for the early game, it is tricky to rely on a move with such bad base power.
Mirror MoveFlyingStatus20--The user counters the target by mimicking the target’s last move.It has a unique move effect, but it's very unreliable and not really useful on paper.
PsywavePsychicSpecial15-100%The target is attacked with an odd psychic wave. The attack varies in intensity. The effects of these moves heavily depend on RNG which makes them unpredictable, let alone these moves are worse compared to others.
MagnitudeGroundPhysical30-100%The user attacks everything around it with a ground-shaking quake. Its power varies.
AssistNormalStatus20--The user hurriedly and randomly uses a move among those known by ally Pokémon.
BarrageNormalPhysical201585%Round objects are hurled at the target to strike two to five times in a row. These are signature moves for Pokémon that usually rely on the opposite category. This renders them useless in most situations since there is always a better alternative corresponding to the Pokémon's base stats.
Needle ArmGrassPhysical1560100%The user attacks by wildly swinging its thorny arms. This may also make the target flinch.
Magnet BombSteelPhysical2060-The user launches steel bombs that stick to the target. This attack never misses.
Heart StampPsychicPhysical2560100%The user unleashes a vicious blow after its cute act makes the target less wary. This may also make the target flinch.
ForesightNormalStatus40--Enables a Ghost-type target to be hit by Normal- and Fighting-type attacks. This also enables an evasive target to be hit. Each of these three moves negates a specific type immunity of the target Pokémon. It is easier to just use different moves to hit the opponent instead.
Odor SleuthNormalStatus40--Enables a Ghost-type target to be hit by Normal- and Fighting-type attacks. This also enables an evasive target to be hit.
Miracle EyePsychicStatus40--Enables a Dark-type target to be hit by Psychic-type attacks. This also enables an evasive target to be hit.
Secret PowerNormalPhysical2070100%The additional effects of this attack depend upon where it was used. There are too many conditions to take into account for this move. Terrain Pulse, Nature Power and Weather Ball serve somewhat similar purposes already.
CamouflageNormalStatus20--The user’s type is changed depending on its environment, such as at water’s edge, in grass, or in a cave.Like Secret Power, it is too messy to get the hang on.
Mud SportGroundStatus15--The user kicks up mud on the battlefield. This weakens Electric-type moves for five turns. These lack serious competitive potential. In past games, you never wanted to teach your Pokémon any of these.
Water SportWaterStatus15--The user soaks the battlefield with water. This weakens Fire-type moves for five turns.
Silver WindBugSpecial560100%The target is attacked with powdery scales blown by the wind. This may also raise all the user’s stats.Pokémon that learn these moves usually have access to more reliable stat boosting and offensive moves. Also, Ancient Power already fulfills a similar purpose.
Ominous WindGhostSpecial560100%The user blasts the target with a gust of repulsive wind. This may also raise all the user’s stats at once.
Trump CardNormalSpecial5--The fewer PP this move has, the greater its power. This move unfolds its true power after it has been used several times. However, stronger moves could be chosen instead, rendering this move obsolete.
Wring OutNormalSpecial5-100%The user powerfully wrings the target. The more HP the target has, the greater the move’s power. This functions exactly like Regigigas' signature move Crush Grip. To keep things unique, this move was excluded from the final roster.
Me FirstNormalStatus20--The user cuts ahead of the target to copy and use the target’s intended move with greater power. This move fails if it isn’t used first.Unpredictable and unreliable. It has a unique effect, but I don't see any potential uses for this move.
Mud BombGroundSpecial106585%The user launches a hard-packed mud ball to attack. This may also lower the target’s accuracy. Most of the Pokémon that can learn this move in past games have access to Earth Power as well.
Rock ClimbNormalPhysical209085%The user attacks the target by smashing into it with incredible force. This may also confuse the target. There are enough strong Normal-type moves already. Also, Dizzy Punch (Kangaskhan's signature move) has a similar effect.
Flame BurstFireSpecial1570100%The user attacks the target with a bursting flame. The bursting flame damages Pokémon next to the target as well.Heat Wave is preferred over this since it is stronger, damages both opponents equally and it may cause burn. And unlike this move, Heat Wave damages opposing Pokémon only. If triple battles were still a thing in this generation, the move would be a tiny bit more useful.
SynchronoisePsychicSpecial10120100%Using an odd shock wave, the user inflicts damage on any Pokémon of the same type in the area around it.This is one of the strangest moves ever created. In most cases, this can only hit Normal or Psychic type Pokémon. And funnily enough, Psychic is not very effective against itself...
Sky DropFlyingPhysical1060100%The user takes the target into the sky, then drops it during the next turn. The target cannot attack while in the sky.Sky Drop basically is a much worse version of Fly and Bounce. It's yet another two-turn flying-type move that would clog up learnsets.
